    Zehra Şonya

    (Sculpture, Installation Art, Feminist Art)

Following the training received from the Department of Sculpture in Hacettepe University, Şonya moved back to the island. She goes out of traditional sculpture concept with her extraordinary sculpture practices. In the meantime, Şonya gives a good account of herself with her work in installation art. Actively participating in EMAA Capital Art Center since 2002 and later on, carrying out various art projects in Eastern Mediterranean University Center for Cyprus Studies, Zehra Şonya has a part in projects gathering the societies together in Cyprus especially in relation to peace discussions. Along with her installation art completed with waste materials, Şonya also uses more traditional materials such as stones and metals in her work. Şonya's unique artworks made from such traditional materials can be observed in the collection. A sample from 2003 resembling an individual being crucified is an indicator of delicacy and originality regarding the materials in use. Şonya approached issues such as politics, the situation that Cyprus is in and its effects on women, problematic issues resulting from masculine system, and identity politics in her work. In her versatile works including the unresolved Cyprus problem to the relation between the North of Cyprus with Turkey, she makes interpretations on her artwork from a feminist perspective.
